Jay Torrence

Jay Torrence (playwright of Studs Terkel Circus) is an ensemble member and the former Artistic Director of The Neo-Futurists. Writing, performing and directing for Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind since 2002. Torrence wrote and performed in the plays Burning Bluebeard and Roustabout: The Great Circus Train Wreck both produced by The Neo-Futurists. Roustabout was awarded the John W. Schmid Award for Outstanding New Work, The After Dark Award for Outstanding Production and received a second production in Chicago’s Theater on the Lake Season. His Jeff Recommended play Ivywild was produced by The Hypocrites. Torrence has performed and toured nationally with The Neo-Futurists, 500 Clown and Redmoon. Torrence earned an MFA from The University of British Columbia. His writing was awarded The Annie Dillard Award for Creative Non Fiction and The Prairie Fire Literary Award for Non Fiction. Torrence studied physical theater under Master Clown Philippe Gaulier, 500 Clown, Pasticene Physical Theater, The Second City, Improv Olympics and has over seven years of competitive USGF Artistic Gymnastics, acrobatics, tumbling and trampoline training.
