Making Radio with Studs & the Studs Terkel Radio Archive with WFMT

May 10, 2014 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Hear stories about working with Studs Terkel from his colleagues at WFMT 98.7 in Chicago, Studs’s artistic home for over five decades where his official title was “free spirit.” Moderated by journalist and WFMT’s Critic-at-Large Andrew Patner, this panel will feature anecdotes and recollections about Studs’s interview methods, how his oral history books grew out of his radio work, his views of media in general and what it was like to work with Studs on a daily basis. The panel will feature Lois Baum (former associate program director at WFMT), Tony Judge, Andi Lamoreaux (WFMT music director), Sydney Lewis (Studs’s longtime assistant), David Polk (WFMT program director) and Steve Robinson (WFMT general manager), and Louise Frank (Curating Producer of WFMT’s weekly broadcast, The Best of Studs Terkel, now in its tenth year).

The second portion of the session will focus on the future, in particular the creation of the Studs Terkel Radio Archive, a digital library of the more than 7,500 programs Studs created between 1952 and 1998 featuring many of the 20th century’s most important musicians, writers, social activists, philosophers, historians, scientists, theater and film artists and working people. This portion will be presented by Tony Macaluso (director of syndication for the WFMT Radio Network), Allison Schein (Terkel Radio Archive coordinator) and Anne Wootton (of Pop Up Archive).
